Personality & Traits
General Overview | Aira is inquisitive, curious, and determined. Due to her past she carries a great deal of pain within her; this has caused her to become rather shy and withdrawn, in contrast to most Selkies. Nevertheless, she is wholly dedicated to her work and to her career as a Starfleet officer.
Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: She is hard-working and dedicated, and passionately curious about other cultures, eager to expand her breadth of knowledge. She is also possessed with an enormous well of compassion for others, although she finds it difficult to express her deepest emotions. Weaknesses: She finds it difficult to open up to others and is often mistaken as standoffish by people who are unaware of her personal loss, and she has a tendency to daydream at inopportune moments. |
|
Ambitions | Aira joined Starfleet partly to escape painful memories, but also out of a desire to broaden her horizons and to explore what could be found beyond her own world. Her ambitions don't rise far beyond serving as an A&A officer to the best of her ability.
Hobbies & Interests | She is a voracious reader, and spends most of her time with her nose in a book. However, she has also been known to enjoy deep water diving, especially in caves, and relishes every time an opportunity to do so arises during an archaeology expedition. |
Personal History | As a member of a species with an extremely narrow fertility window, it was always expected that Aira would bear as many children with as many different partners as possible during that time. Growing up in a large, loosely-connected extended family like most Selkies, Aira had no difficulty with the idea of meeting her society’s expectations, but when she reached reproductive maturity and entered the fertile period of her amphibious phase, she experienced great difficulty in conceiving, and when she was finally able to conceive a child she prematurely delivered a stillborn son, whom she named Alos, and afterwards her doctors recommended that she not attempt to have any more children. Her dreams of having children of her own shattered, Aira threw herself into her studies, earning a doctorate in xenoarchaeology from the University of Pacifica. She became enthralled with learning about the histories and traditions of alien cultures, and gradually came to see Starfleet as a window into a new life, far away from all of her friends and siblings of reproductive age, and their children, who were a constant reminder of what she had lost. She was granted admission to Starfleet Academy and entered the final, fully mature post-reproductive aquatic phase of her life cycle during her last semester at the Academy, which, while stressful, she was able to endure and managed to graduate on time in 2406.
Service Record | Her options for postings were limited to ships that either had a Cetacean Ops or were able to modify her crew quarters to accomodate the large volume of water required for her survival outside of her hydration suit, which she wore at all times while on duty after entering her aquatic phase. She served as the A&A officer on various smaller vessels for five years after graduation until her posting to the Titan. |
